This short collection of crude-sounding live tracks is worth listening to simply because it's by the fabulous Staple Singers. Most of the tracks are from the '60s, and they do bristle with Pops's unearthly guitar, Mavis's impeccably strong voice, and the distinctive backing harmonies of the Staples clan. Surprisingly, none of the new noise-reduction techniques appear to have been used on these hissy live takes, two of which can be found in superior form on the essential collection Uncloudy Day. Completists will want to hear the charged concert versions of "The Last Time," "Sit Down Servant," and "Respect Yourself"; more casual admirers are advised to skip over this substandard offering by one of gospel music's greatest groups. --Mike McGonigal
