There is nothing subtle about Butterfly Kisses & Bedtime Prayers. Those given to sentimentality and open weeping at Hallmark commercials and episodes of Seventh Heaven are in for a treat from Bob Carlisle, along with several guest artists. The title cut, a ballad about Daddy's little girl on her wedding day, is sure to put a knot in your throat and a tear in your eye. The remainder of the album--a blend of modern and traditional lullabies--celebrates the joy and wonder of parenthood through pop-styled versions of "Mozart's Lullaby," "Jesus Loves Me," and "Edelweiss," along with a few Carlisle originals. Vocally, he often sounds moved nearly to tears himself, and while his mellow tones are deeper and more multifaceted, his pull-on-the-heartstrings approach is akin to that of consummate oversinger Michael Bolton. In other words, this is not a recording for everyone. But for those who believe more is more, this is perfect musical accompaniment to the overwhelming pride, love, and gratitude for one's child. --Paige La Grone Review by Amazon.com |
